Blending the ink is equivalent to hard wiring the fix. Mikling, do you mind to give more detail of how you blend IS ink to tweak the colors? To me profiling is a programmable answer to the issue that is not perfect. Making custom profiles may help but it may not solve the problem. But if you are told that all are printed with compatible inks you will definitely start to wonder which has the most accurate colors. There is then the question which is the best or which has the correct colors? If you know all are printed with OEM inks you probably won't ask the question which has the correct colors. If you are shown photos printed on i860, ip4000, ip4300, ip4700, and the latest with a PGI-225 and CLI-226 you will see that they are all different. It is difficult, if not impossible, to reprint a photo on a newer printer that copies the colors printed by an older one.
It's very annoying that colors changed whenever Canon moved from one cartridge system to another. This is a custom inkset not readily available from Image Specialists and even they don't know what I used, but all the components are all from them. This is just my opinion as to what was acceptable and I put in the effort to improve the standard offering so that improved output can be had. One might ask if Canon changed the colors to deter aftermarkets suppliers? After spending the hours and hours I did to get the colors so close, I would tend to think so and this was partly their objective.
What was used on the BCI-6 as well as the CLI-8 generation are very different. In my opinion, Cyan Magenta and Yellow needed revisions and this is what I have done. This allows for beautiful photo prints with the dye-based inks, and laser-quality text. The Canon PIXMA MG5220 has 5 slots for ink tanks - 4 dye-based inks, including 1 black, 1 cyan, 1 magenta, and 1 yellow - and 1 pigment-based black ink. The results may vary a bit by paper but I used the most commonly used paper with Canon printers.
